Waterproofing is an important step in the construction process, but with so many options, it can feel overwhelming for those outside the industry. We’ve created a quick guide to two types of waterproofing solutions you might come across: EPDM and polyurea.
The waterproofing process should ideally be done when the property is being built. Your building team can advise on the best type of waterproof materials for your design.
For example, flat roofing needs to withstand unpredictable weather, wear and tear, UV light, and more. Your waterproofing helps to safeguard against these elements, providing protection against leaks that could become a serious issue for the building.
EPDM is a type of synthetic rubber. It is named after the components (monomers) that are combined to create it: ethylene, propylene, and diene.
The substance can be used for a variety of purposes, including waterproofing, because it is weather and UV resistant.
Estimates show that the lifespan of EPDM roofs can exceed 50 years, but in reality, it can vary. However, this makes it an interesting option for roof solar panels because of its long service life.
Advantages of EPDM include:
Recycling
An EPDM roof has a specific lifespan, but it can be recycled into other products. The EPDM roofing association in America began a research project about 15 years ago that examined the possibility of recycling the product as roofs approached the time for replacement. By the end of the first quarter of 2012, they reported over 13.5 million square feet of EPDM membrane had been recycled.
Rainwater harvesting
Rainwater harvesting is a popular option for sustainable homes, but the right materials need to be in place to facilitate it. EPDM may be suitable for rainwater harvesting as it is thought not to pollute run-off rainwater. However, this is something that needs to be investigated for your particular building and it is always important to check with local rules and regulations.
Green roofs
EPDM is usually suitable for use in green roofs (sometimes known as living roofs), which is where a roof is covered in vegetation. Green roofs can last longer, reduce energy loss, and have environmental benefits.
Another option for waterproofing is Polyurea. Polyurea refers to a range of synthetic polymer formulations. In some forms, it is UV resistant, dries quickly, and can be applied hot or cold, which makes it useful for waterproofing on areas such as roofs.
Advantages of polyurea include:
Polyurea can be applied in a number of ways, depending on the circumstances, including through hot and cold sprays.
Hot, high-pressure spray applications need special equipment and training, making cold polyurea application an attractive option, especially for smaller jobs.
